“There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.”
M. Scott Peck
Over the past few months, I’ve lost my vulnerability. My openness to share some not-so-pleasant things about myself. Areas of my life that I’d rather not put under a public microscope.
After all, vulnerability isn’t something that comes naturally to me, which is probably the case for most of us. Because when we’re vulnerable, we make ourselves “susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm.” Add a dash of uncertainty to the mix, and we’ve got a recipe for physical and mental distress.
Still, mindfulness has helped me understand the importance of remaining vulnerable, no matter what stage of life we’re in. It opens us up to change, allows us to understand new perspectives, and reflects our true selves back into the world.
In other words, despite how it might sometimes feel, there’s strength in vulnerability; in agreeing to set aside our armor and open our hearts and minds. Through it, we have the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and how we interact with the world. To dig deep and become the best version of ourselves.
Here’s to vulnerability. Here’s to seeking your revolution.
